Zone G. The house of the griffins

This zone has some houses with an abundance of roof terracottas from the first two phases, those with the painted decoration in white on a red background.

During the first phase (c. 625–600 BC), the terracotta decorations took the shape of real or mythic animals. The griffins are an excellent example.

Also the painted decoration in this first phase often depicted animals in a free style. The animals could appear in unexpected positions, for instance the horses on the undersides of ordinary tiles.

The second phase (c. 600–575 BC), on the contrary, used formalized, more precise Greek-inspired patterns, guilloches and chains of pendent palmettes.
