The monumental area. The different periods c. 650–550 BC
The first building in the monumental area was one built with wooden posts fastened in holes dug into the rock (1). The orientation in the first building period with roofs covered with tiles was the same (2). This period was followed by buildings with a new, slightly different, orientation (3). Finally, the buildings of the last period were erected (4).
The material from the different periods can be illustrated by the following examples: A Black impasto fragment with an incised and excised horse (1), part of a painted architectural terracotta in the first experimental style (2), a somewhat later piece (3) and a fragment of the mould-made terracotta decoration with its fine details (4).
From the orientation of the sacrificial pit, it is clear that it was there from the beginning, which means at least from the middle of the 7th century. It was in use right until the end and was found filled with carbonized wood. This was probably where meat was sacrificed to the gods and the meal was prepared. Sacrifices were among the few occasions when meat was consumed.
